I chose to blog on Chive and it’s sister sites for two reasons. One, it’s my husbands favorite site (and soon you will understand why) and two, Professor Kerr has never heard of it, so she asked me to. You may not know the site, but you have probably seen the tee-shirts with the logos and wondered what KCCO is. Before I was introduced to the website by my husband, I had seen the KCCO logo and was curious. theChive is directed toward men and woman that don’t mind looking at photos of half naked women and photos that are there just to make you laugh. The description on the site says it best: “theCHIVE is home to the best funny, viral and interesting photos from around the world. Content published contains original photos, awesomeness, rumors, nicotine, speculation, beautiful girls, funny pictures, assumptions, opinions, ugly people, and factual information. Postings may contain erroneous or inaccurate information. theCHIVE would be nothing without you, our loyal Chivers” (http://thechive.com/).
Though, some of the content on this site may offend some women, it’s a interesting site to log onto for a good laugh. They have their pictures broken into different galleries and I can’t imagine anyone could look at this site without finding something that would make them giggle, at least just a little.
The site was founded in 2008 by brothers Leo and John Resig and was best known then for a series of internet hoaxes. Their love of funny and ridiculous photos turned into the world wide phenomenon it is today. The brothers started RESIGnation LLC to manage their series of web pages, all targeting different set of people. theChive is the mother site, and that gave birth to theBerry for women, theThrottle for the adrenaline junkies, theBrigade for the military type and theChivery. theChivery is a web store and it’s the only place you can purchase KCCO items and clothing. From posters to sweatshirts and flasks, you can find their original appeal, but you have to be quick as they sell out fast. They charge from $30 to $50 for a tee-shirt and they are always sold out. An effective marketing strategy, they have sales on a schedule and it gets people online on theChivery waiting to get their tee-shirt before it sells out. There is an app you can download on your phone or tablet and send out newsletters to Chivers email. Their logo “KCCO” is so successful, there are generic tee-shirts being made by other companies. An interesting fact is that the whole site is powered by WordPress.
It’s not only a site for funny and entertaining photos and videos, they have created Chive Charities which accept donations on behalf of people in need. Instead of using the cause to raise awareness for the grantee, they help the grantee raise awareness for the cause. For example, a few months ago there was a girl with a rare disease and they helped her raise money for her medical expenses and medical equipment she needed to stay in her home and have a better quality of life. Each month they feature a different “orphaned” cause and pick someone to feature for that month and raise money on their behalf.
The new roll out on theChive is the Chive Brewery. Not only can you wear your favorite website, you can now drink it as well. From California to Massachusetts you can purchase the beer, but in the midwest, we have to go to Chicago to find it. Another new addition to the company is a dating site.
It’s a fun and playful set of sites well plotted out to reach all types of people looking for a laugh that is specialized just for them. It’s a growing social media site that is light and the sole purpose of it is to make people laugh. From “So you got drunk” to “Motivational” galleries, there is something for everyone. What started as a series of hoaxes from a set of brothers with a great sense of humor, they have turned it into a world wide sensation that not only makes people laugh, but gives back to their loyal Chivers by their charity program. Check them out and remember…KCCO!
I really like your detailed explanation on the Chive. I’m not familiar with their website, but I do like some of the charity things they have done for those less fortunate. Good Job. I will definitely check out the website.
Great blog; you made me really curious and I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the details on all the sites. I love how two brothers sense of humor was able to start this. I’m looking forward to a good laugh!
Nice graphics, however you don’t have approval from the source to use them do you? Please take them down because you could receive a “cease and desist” letter. You probably won’t thought because you are providing free advertising for them with your post.
In class we talked about using copyright free images and sourcing them from the Creative Commons on Flickr.
Hi Sara,
I’m sorry if it seems I wasn’t following direction, but this must have been discussed the one class I had to miss because I was ill. I don’t know what Creative Commons on Flickr is. I will revise. I was careful to give credit where credit is due and put the web links from where I got all the images from. I will google Creative Commons and go from there.
Is this where I lost points on my blogs? Being I didn’t know about this rule, is there a way to earn these points back? I do realize as well that ignorance is no excuse, however, some of these assignments and rules were hard to find in CONTENT and if it is posted I missed it. Some of the discussions weren’t uncovered until after I missed the window.
I am on the edge as far as my grade is concerned and with the embarrassing saga that has gone on in our IMC group. Your a busy woman as it is, and knowing you have had to listen to all this drama has me very embarrassed. I have been trying to keep that train from derailing for quite some time, but recent events have been out of my control. I’m very tense at this point.
Of course, since we are meeting before class I can speak to you about this tomorrow, but I am losing sleep over all this and sick to my stomach over the drama and points. Oh those pesky points! 🙂
I appreciate your open door policy. Looking forward to a great class tomorrow night and clearing the air and meeting you in person about the presentation.

I actually first heard of Chive when I accidentally wound up in the middle of a Chive party in downtown Minneapolis. It’s definitely a male oriented form of social media. Except for of course the half clothed ladies. They do post quite a few hilarious things. I also bought a Chive shirt off of a guy at the event, which I still have. The parties and t-shirts are good support media!
